Dog is still itchy and butt problems continue!?

I have taken my miniature pinscher to the vet twice and they drained her anal sacs (only one had anything in it and it was a small amount) and gave her $400.00 worth of meds - steroids, etc. She was better for a week or so after stopping the meds but now her butt is itching again! They diagnosed her with colitis the last time and said it is probably due to food allergies because she is also having skin problems on her ears and is itchy. (No worms or fleas were found)

I have her on a special diet (duck, venison and potatoes) per the vet but it isn't helping!!! I even started feeding her soft food because I thought maybe her poo problems and red butt were due to her not chewing her food enough. (She scarfs down her food.)

I don't know what else to do and i can't afford to keep taking her to the vet for temporary relief! Any idea of what else it could be causing her problems?

Symptoms:

- hair loss and very dry skin on the outer edge of her ears.

- itchy skin that she licks constantly (mostly legs, butt and stomach area)

- prior to last vet trip, she had blood in her stool and it was either lumpy or seemed like there was puss in it. (Gross, I know...they said it was colitis) This was cleared up with the meds although her poo is still lumpy - like her food is not being digested all the way.

Thanks for any suggestions or advice!Dog is still itchy and butt problems continue!?
u might want to try feeding her a small amount of fiber like all bran or grape nuts mixed in her food even a little fiber powder. bulking up the bowels should help firm her up and make the anal glands release when she goes. benadryal pills will also help with her itchy skin and she can take 1 pill per 20 lbs of her weight but i would try 1/2 in the am and the other at night since she sounds quite thin. u can also appy benadryal cream or any kind of anti itch creams to the bad areas. my poochin has gland problems and he sometimes gets absess in the recal area which have to be drained, so last weeek when i noticed him rubbing and throwing his back end down i put him in the tub and soaked his bum with epsom salts and water then put on latex and vaseline and squeezed the glands. i was nervous put it worked and he is fine again.i have been giving him 1/4 cp of all bran in the morning and his poop is a lot firmer and the glands seem to be a lot better.it has saved me vet bills so u can go on line and print out how to do it right and u can help ur dog feel better.allergies could be from wet grass and weeds ur dog gets into when she is out so wipe her down after her outing and use the benadryal and creams and hopefully she will start getting well. good luckDog is still itchy and butt problems continue!?
I would take it to a new vet for starters. Second I would switch the dog onto home cooked dog food, it is simple to prepare. Many comercial dog foods have iritants in them, even the ';vet formulas'; - I bet that would help within days.

It does sound like some sort of an allergy, the legs, butt and stomach area. The ears though sound like she might be getting Mange. Please try a new vet and test for Mange. All the simptoms suggest it as well.
i can really relate to your situation. I adopted a pom who will be 9 in april. at first, she wouldnt eat anything and did have a couple accidents on the floor. she doesnt go to the door either to let you know when she has to go out. Now i just ask her everytime i have to go, cause i am 63 and she is close to my age actually. I have to feed her one little piece of food at a time, or she will just inhale it. then she throws up all over the place and obviously the food is practicalllly whole and not digested. i havd tried several different kinds of food including the one you mentioned. she didnt like it either. i feed her Chef Michaels now, the chicken kind and some of the beef kind. Both have veggies. I give her a green bean first....she likes those. then i break up a potato in my teeth and give it to her and she will eat it, and same with a pea, and also carrots. i dont give her the meat first cause she will scarf that down and not eat the veggies. I have paid attention to how much she can eat and not get sick. she has hypoglycemia which a lot of the small dogs have. i have it too so i understand. if she doesnt eat, she starts shaking. now i feed her a little bit and then a few hours later, she acts hungry so i get the food out and do it again, one piece at a time. i make sure she has fresh water (filtered cause our well water is bad( I have learned how to groom her myself; i clip her nails, shampoo and blow dry, check ears, and even clean the anal ducts. I do that in the sink before i shampoo her. It is much easier than i thought. I would think that the pet store would be able to show u what is safe and good for the hair loss and dry skin....i got some shampoo with aloe, but it doesnt seem to be improving. What i was told to do when i first got her...give her some cooked brown rice mixed with a little chicken, no seasonings. she did love that and it gave her the fiber she needed to help regulate the bowels. But she also needed crunchy food too, so i have add the doggy vitamins and also i give her these cheesey puffs for dogs (she loves cheese) and also put a little peanut butter on it too once in awhile. I have had colitis for years, and i found that fiber does the trick. i was on bentyl also, but no longer have to take that. make sure u dont give her any seasonings cause that will irritate. stay away from table scraps too. that was hard, but she is okay with that now, knowing that her food is hers. and mine is mine. Feed her small amounts moe often. hope this helps
