How to stop my dog from biting his tail ?

I have a 8 months old german spitz ..

He has a bad habit of chasing his tail and biting it likee a throat of a chicken ..

This has caused a lot of hair loss from his tail and his tail has become thinner .

How will I stop him from doing this ???How to stop my dog from biting his tail ?
Hello

Your dog might be hyperactive or stressed or have a high amount of energy unconsumed.

Try and exercise him a lot more, play with him, so that you burn out that energy.

When he starts chasing his tail, try and draw his attention to you calling him, shaking a toy etc. When he STOPS , reward him with a little snack or pet him.

It will take some time though, it's a nasty habit. Kind of like biting nails for humans. How to stop my dog from biting his tail ?
My first thought is ...Is he on flea prevention? When a dog gets fleas one of the first places a flea bites is at the base of the tail. Is the area where he bits red or irritated looking? If he is not on flea prevention, i would definately take him to the vet and get him put on it. Something like advantage or frontline should work. If he has a flea dermatitis, which is an allergy to flea bites, then he would probably need a course of prednesone to help with the inflammation.
