What caused my hair to fall out?

I started taking birth control shots in 2007, I stopped close to the end of 2007 because I noticed I was having a lot of hair loss.I also had surgery and a child in 2007. I noticed my hair start to fall out in Feb 2008. So I went and got on the pills. I can't tell you exactly when I started the pills. It grew back a little. But then it start thinning out. I stop taking the pills now my hair is looking healthy and shiny! Do you think the pills took out my hair?What caused my hair to fall out?
