What could be the cause?

of my hamsters hair loss. he is almost completely bald. his remaining hair is also gray. (used to be black)

what could be the cause of this? What could be the cause?
Well the cause is most likely mites, parasites or fleas. Check through the remaining fur or his skin and see if you can find black or white dots. If you do, perhaps take him to the vet for treatment (Because the amount of hairloss seems serious) Or buy rodent flea and mite spray from your local pet store. If this isn't the case, you may be feeding your hamster the wrong diet. http://www.zapgraphix.com/articles_0024.

If you bathe your hamster you should stop this. It isn't necessary and hamsters skin/hair gets dried out from the water/shampoo.

One more thing, How old is he? Hair loss in rodents also can be caused by old age. Most hamsters only live to 2 years old.

It doesn't hurt to take him for a check up. Look for exotics vets or Small animal vets.

hope i helped.

EDIT:: Deathly ill symptoms would be not eating or drinking as much, and sleeping all the time. Lethargic movement is also bad. check his eyes and ears to see if they are nice and clear. If not he could have respiratory problems. What could be the cause?
How old is the hamster? If he's 2-3 years old, he's in his golden years unfortunately and hairless is sometimes to be expected. Poor little bald guy :(

/edit

i copied this from a website for you

Skin Diseases: hamsters can be infested with a number of mites, which can be identified by a skin scraping by a vet and treated accordingly. Ringworm (actually a fungal infection) can also occur, and requires treatment by a vet. Allergies and skin infections can also occur. Hair loss is not all that unusual and can be seasonal or happen in older hamsters. If there is flakiness or redness of the skin or any lesions on the skin, or the hamster appears to be itchy and scratching more than usual, a vet should be seen. Hamsters do have scent glands on their flanks which can be dark and sometimes alarm owners. These occur on both sides of the body and do not appear irritated or bother the hamster. Cedar bedding can also cause skin irritation or allergies in addition to lung problems so should be avoided.
Hello.

Hope you are fine.

Hair Loss and Its Causes:

causes of excessive hair loss:

A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.

Hormonal problems may cause hair loss. If your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, your hair may fall out. This hair loss usually can be helped by treatment thyroid disease. Hair loss may occur if male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens, are out of balance. Correcting the hormone imbalance may stop your hair loss.

Many women notice hair loss about 3 months after they've had a baby. This loss is also related to hormones. During pregnancy, high levels of certain hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally fall out. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, that hair falls out and the normal cycle of growth and loss starts again.

Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners (also called anticoagulants), medicines used for gout, medicines used in chemotherapy to treat cancer, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants.

Certain infections can cause hair loss. Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children. The infection is easily treated with antifungal medicines.

Finally, hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Since hair loss may be an early sign of a disease, it is important to find the cause so that it can be treated.

Treatment for hair loss

Depending on your type of hair loss, treatments are available. If a medicine is causing your hair loss, your doctor may be able to prescribe a different medicine. Recognizing and treating an infection may help stop the hair loss. Correcting a hormone imbalance may prevent further hair loss.

Medicines may also help slow or prevent the development of common baldness. One medicine, minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine), is available without a prescription. It is applied to the scalp. Both men and women can use it. Another medicine, finasteride (brand name: Propecia) is available with a prescription. It comes in pills and is only for men. It may take up to 6 months before you can tell if one of these medicines is working.

If adequate treatment is not available for your type of hair loss, you may consider trying different hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement.

Hope this helps you . Thank you.
Hair Loss ( Alopecia )

Hair loss can occur for a number of reasons in hamsters. This loss of hair can be due to both disease and nondisease conditions. Continual rubbing on feeders or sides of the cage as well as protein deficiency and barbering (hair chewing by cage mates), are examples of nondisease causes of alopecia. Infestation with demodectic mites is one of the most common infectious causes of patchy alopecia and scaling in hamsters. Other conditions that lead to hair loss include adrenal tumors, thyroid deficiency, and chronic renal disease. Some of these conditions may be correctable, while others are not.
