Does long hair cause you to lose more hair?

I'm 13 with about mid-back length hair, not too far from the small of my back. It's pretty thick (and pretty straight too) and I like it long. My mom disagrees though and says that if I have long hair now I won't have much hair left by the time I'm in my 20's and over that age. She wants me to cut it shorter but I don't like my hair short- I don't even lose that much hair right now, even when I brush it. Is it true what she says about hair loss because of long hair?Does long hair cause you to lose more hair?
I have found some good tips in following link, It may be good for you too

No, that is just silly! I don't know where your mom got that idea, but that is totally inaccurate. Long hair does not cause ';hair loss,'; you just shed at your normal rate. :) However, mistreating your long hair with overexposure to heat ( too much blowdrying, heat curling/straightening, etc.) or chemicals (lots of hair dye or perms) will damage your hair and cause some serious breakage. Also make sure to keep your split ends at bay with regular trims.

I have some friends with past waist length hair who have maintained that length since they were your age and younger. They have some of THE most gorgeous, thick hair I've ever seen. I even know women well into their 40s and 50s who take really good care of their hair and have it be healthy and thick. :)

Good luck to you!
I've never heard that just having it long will make it fall out. It might break more easily if you're not careful with it, but it's not like it'll be coming out of your scalp entirely. It might also look like you lose more in the shower or when you brush it, but that's just because each hair is longer. I had my hair about the length you're describing until just before I turned 18, and have since cut it really short (maybe 4'; at the longest part) and there's been no major difference in how much does or doesn't fall out.
That is not true. Hair grows all the time. I had my hair down past my back when I was 17-18 and I got it cut but now it's growing back out. I am 20 and it seems fine. Not loosing any hair or anything. Don't worry. No matter how long your hair gets, it will be okay. Hair loss does not associate with how long you grow your hair out.

The length of your hair does not determine hair loss. Hair loss happens for many reasons such as heredity, diet, illness. Everyone loses about 100 strands of hair a day. You may be noticing it more because of the length of your hair.
Totally untrue, you lose hair at the roots and your roots have no knowledge of how long the hair is, we shed around 100 hairs a day regardless of their length. They're just more noticeable when they're longer.
