I went vegan over three months ago. Over the past few weeks, but particularly over the past week, I've noticed that my hair has gotten thinner. It's not noticeable to other people at this point, but I can definitely feel a difference when I run my fingers through my hair and I'm starting to be able to see my scalp through my hair. I used to have very thick, healthy hair. Did this happen to anyone else after going vegan or has anyone experienced this even if they haven't gone vegan? What was the cause of it, exactly? What did you do about it? Did anything restore your hair to it's original condition? Please, I'm freaking out here!!
Please, no rude comments about veganism. Veganism itself is not to blame. I'm guessing that it's a nutritional deficiency although it *might* be a thyroid problem, as I was diagnosed with borderline hypothyroidism a few years ago (but then again, I only started noticing this change very recently, after going vegan). I also had a very traumatic year in 2008 (I lost my mother and my grandmother within five months of each other - could stress be partially to blame?) Please, if you have any words of wisdom and personal experience to offer me, I'd really appreciate it. I'm so scared right now.
Yes, I am going to schedule an appointment to get blood work done soon. But I just need some words to ease the anxiety I'm feeling at this very moment.Question about hair loss....PLEASE HELP!!?
I would say it's probably your thyroid since you were diagnosed with borderline hypothyroid and all the emotional stress is bad for your thyroid. Plus you could be getting less iodine on a vegan diet. You really need to find out from the doctor but I would bet it's your thyroid.
Also, I don't think it has anything to do with protein. (it's so annoying when people always freak out over protein).Question about hair loss....PLEASE HELP!!?
I don't know but you may just be paranoid. 3 months isn't very long... Has your caloric intake gone way down since going vegan? You are right to get blood work done. I just wonder if it is due to you going vegan...or not... I havn't read this before you could google it but you would probably just get pro or anti vegan arguments anyways. Do you notice your hair falling out or is it just thinning out? I'm a guy but I haven't had this happen to me...
I ate nuts that have some of the B vitamins and lots of metals, so there was no issue for me. now with a diet of carnivorous fish I don't see any difference other than knowing that I'm getting enough vit D and B12 and iodine.
I don't have any words of wisdom but maybe kaine from the Unfiltered radio show has some words of wisdom. he usually tells something at the end of the show.
My hair is still as thick and wild as ever.
Just make sure that you're getting all the vitamins that you need. You hair needs vitamins as well.

I would guess it is a combination of all of the above, shampoo, diet and stress....See your doctor for a checkup.
Probably a stupid question, but did you change shampoos?
GO TO YOUR DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If your eating healthy then it's not because you're vegan. If you're not sure if you're eating healthy I suggest you start taking a multivitamin, at least just until you get your diet under control to the point where you know you'd be getting all the nutrients and vitamins you need without a supplement. I'm sure you'll be fine. It's just hair. As long as nothing more serious is happening to you. If the hair loss does have to do with your diet then it should be okay once you start getting healthy again! Hair grows after all.
Definatley sounds like an iron deficiency, anemia. My hair was falling out quite noticably and I'm a vegetarian. Tell me, are your periods super heavy? Do you bruise easily? Do you feel really, really, weak when you menstruate? You're probably anemic. Have a doctor comnirm this of course. But do not take any Iron supplement in pill form, your body will absorb only about 5% of that iron, take it in liquid form, your body can absorb 25% of that. I use Floradix, which is the most renowned and best liquid iron supplement out there, you can find it online cheap and at Whole Foods slightly more money. I am so glad I started taking it six months ago, my periods don't wipe me out, and all the hair I lost is growing back again. Seriously, my problems were identical to yours before I was diagnosed
When I had anemia, my hemoglobin levels were also normal, you need your iron levels checked speifically
Dietary imbalance/nutritional deficiencies can bring about temporary hair loss/thinning as can stress or shock and hormonal imbalance. Womens' hair can be affected by the hormonal changes brought about by pregnancy and the menopause. Lack of protein or essential fatty acids causes hair loss.I find that taking a good all-round vegan friendly multivitamin and mineral supplement each day really does help my hair, and starflower oil capsules will really benefit your hair and skin as well. Kelp can help out with iodine, a lack of which may be further lowering your thyroid function, which you mention was already a tad low. Do have the blood work done, thyroid can particularly cause hair loss, as well as cold hands and feet. Talk with your doc while you are there about dietary choices.
Here a few simple home remedies which can be tried at home to control hair fall.
1.Rinse your hair with a mix of apple cider vinegar and sage tea this helps hair grow..
2. A medicine rich in sulfur is also recommended as sulfur plays an important part in the structure of the hair.
3. Massage with olive oil before going to bed at night and next morning, wash off the hair gently..
4. To treat hair loss apply a little lemon juice with some black tea.Massage well and shampoo.
5. Beat two eggs, and add two tablespoons of water to it. Rinse hair and pour the egg mixture over the hair.Massage the scalp well and leave for 10 minutes. Then wash it.
Stress has a lot to do with it, and do does your thyroid problem. The thyroid has a big par in controlling hormones.
Also, it's probably the change in diet. Hair does need protein, just like muscles, to keep it thick and healthy. Since your body was so used to having such a high protein diet, the drop in the amount of protein you are ingesting is not enough to keep your hair thick. Now like you mentioned above the vegan diet is not to blame, it's just your body that needs to adjust. You could try adding more protein to your diet. That doesn't necessarily mean you need to eat 5 blocks of tofu a day, just add more whole grains, nuts, legumes, and such to keep it well balanced.
it could be cancer
