Being a vegan, I admittedly don't consume as many iron rich foods as I should to get my daily dose, I also do not take a supplement.
The reason I ask is, for the last few months my period has been coming later and later in the month, and this month I haven't got it at all (though I didn't get it til the 28th last month). And when I do get it, it's either very heavy or very light...
Pregnancy is not a factor because my boyfriend and I haven't had sex since mid october.
Also I have found myself exhibiting other symptoms of iron deficiency/anemia such as:
being tired all the time,
craving ice,
hair loss,
and breathlessness.
I'm sure there are others as well.
So what do you think, do you think that an iron deficiency could be what is affecting my period ? That's the only thing I'm worried about (as indemitriosis [that's probably misspelled] runs in my family and I'm worried that I may have that).
Also, on a side note, I did take a home pregnancy test just in case and it did come up negative. Can an iron deficiency cause period alterations ?
Absolutely, I was anemic for a year or so, and still am slightly, and it caused my periods to be slightly irregular, heavy, and very painful. You haven't mentioned pain though, so lucky you! :) I'd recommend going on an iron supplement, and getting a blood test just to make sure. The breathlessness and fatigue are also symptoms I had.Can an iron deficiency cause period alterations ?
If you are at an unhealthy weight that can cause hormonal imbalances that can certainly make you miss periods. Losing weight too fast does that too, but not iron deficiency anemia.
I suggest you eat a healthy diet, with all your needed calories and food groups.
Endometriosis can, but only occasionally, make you miss a period, it most commonly presents with pain (unusual cramps) and infertility rather than an irregular period.
I've also had anemia and it messed up my periods. When I get anemia I have fatigue, hair loss, and a constant headache.
