Golden retriever - Major loss of hair?

Hello,

My golden is a 6 year old female that is loosing her hair...

She has a bald spot on the side of her neck and she is starting to get streaks on her back she is shedding massively. she has a history of thyroid problems the vet gave us pills for that but we found out that could be what is causing her seizures... the hair loss has mostly happen within the last 6 months.

I really care a lot about here and i just need to know if there is something that i can do to make the rest of her life worth living.Golden retriever - Major loss of hair?
Thyroid problems as well as hormone imbalance can be the cause of it. My 1st GR got it when she 1st came in heat. The hormones in her body was changing so that caused her to lose hair in patches. She looked horrible. My other GR now has Hypothyroidism after her spay surgery %26amp; I don't know what's the real cause of it but anyway, she used to lose a lot of hair almost every two months. She is now on medication for life %26amp; her hair has not dropped off ever since. She has very thick double coat %26amp; I live in a hot %26amp; humid country %26amp; I don't even leave my A/C on often.

I think the reason why your dog started shedding heavily is because you stopped the medication. I'm not really sure but it could be the cause of it. Now, I don't know when you stopped her medication but if her hair loss started after the medication was stopped, then I think it's because of that.

You might want to get a second opinion from a different Vet. She probably may need to go through a blood test but sometimes, nothing can be found that is causing it. And the only thing that you can think of that is causing it is her thyroid problem.

Hope this helped you a bit.

ADD: Like I said earlier on, go get another opinion from a different Vet %26amp; there might be another type of medication for her. If the seizures still persist, then maybe she cannot be treated because she has some allergy reaction to the pills %26amp; you just have to live with the problem she has right now. She will always be shedding. You cannot stop it. Only the pills can.Golden retriever - Major loss of hair?
The thyroid is what is causing her hair loss. It is time to due another thyroid panel and check her levels and see if her medication needs to be increased.
Take her to the vet. Try to get a few opinions from different vets in your area. Sounds like it might be mange.
Sounds like she has what they call Mange take her to a vet.
CALL YOUR VET plz people common sense instead of asking us dial that phone!!!
It's not mange, it's definitely a thyroid issue. I work with golden retrievers and this is extremely, and unfortunately, common. The streaks of hair loss down the back is a certain sign of low thyroid. Also, they usually start losing hair on their tail. It is typically a parallel hair loss, meaning both sides of the body will lose hair at the same spot parallel to each other.

We had a dog at our rescue that was suffering from seizures who was later found to have a low thyroid. Our vet told us the opposite of what your vet told you. She said evening out the thyroid levels (by taking medication) would HELP DECREASE seizures. One of our vets must be wrong.

You may want to research online (for instance - go to the soloxine website) or go to other dog specific forums to see if anyone else has dealt with this. Good luck, I really feel bad for your girl.
