Hamster is quite ill, what can i do for him?

My hamster is 2 years 4 months (i know, quite old for a hamster), a syrian male. He has recently, within the past 2 weeks lost all of his hair on his belly, the back of his neck, around his eyes and under his chin and the rest of his skin has become dry and flaky. i know that hair loss can be because of old age, and that it is quite common. But he also has a sore underneath his chin, which occurred one morning. He has a rota-stack cage, and where he stands up to knaw at the bars, i think that is what caused it. it is healing, as i moved him to his smaller cage, but is there anything else i can do for him to make his last weeks/months as comfortable as possible.

There are other things besides age that might cause hair loss, including fungal infections or mites (which can be brought in on bedding). If you take him into a vet, they can examine his skin and tell you what's causing it - just in case it's something you can fix. As far as making him more comfortable - just give him lots of love! :)
