See another vet would be my advice, a second opinion is always a good idea if the 1st one couldn't give you and answer. Ask your current vet for all the test results etc that he has done and take them to the new vet so they don't have to be repeated though.
If you rally do get stuck for money there are charities like the PDSA that can offer help for free or at a reduced cost.My dog is always ill but the vet never seems to find anything specific to work with........Any ideas?
Has he only every been to the same vet as he may need to go to a specailist vet clinic like the Animal health trust . You can't just book an appointment you need to be refered by your vet i would suggest asking your vet if he thinks it would be a good idea . I have attatced there site http://www.aht.org.uk/
Reading this it sounds as if your dog has an Auto Immune disease.Much like people get and not all Vets recognize the symptoms even with all the testing. You definitely need a specialist.Do you have a college near you?? Here is the article, scroll down to the skin autoimmune and this does sound like what your dog has..

well, for 1 thing i wud take him 2 a new vets as the 1 ur goin 2 doesnt seem 2 b doing a very gd job! has the vet ruled out skin cancer?i dont want 2 worry cuz i know how u feel coz ive got 3 dogs myself so i know how u feel.i sympathize with u so much!!!!
TAKE HIM TO ANOTHER VET
AND FEED HIM A GOOD QUALITY FOOD LIKE ORIJEN
I am no expert on the medical conditions that can affect dogs but if i was in your situation i would do the following things:
1 - Get the vet to provide me with a list of all the available tests that i haven't had done and what they might reveal and the chance of them being the cause of all the symptoms.
2 - Consider a second vet opinion. Take all the results with you and just see what they say. Make sure the vet is recommended, maybe even a RSPCA or Dogs Trust vet.
3 - Change his food to a hypoalergenic one. I will be using Arden Grange, which also have a website, but their nutritional content is superior to other quality brands i have found.
If there is an issue with money, i would personally contact the Dogs Trust and explain your situation to them and ask for a free consultation - better than the dog being rehomed when sick or put down because you can't afford it!
If you have exhausted all these avenues, i think you need to consider putting the dog down.
Boxers are a VERY sick breed. Unless you bought him from a highly respected breeder who puts health before show quality, then i suspect that genetics might have a role to play in all of this.
Non specific testing is a nightmare!! I would say repeat visits should not be costing you a full consultation fee, if at all, although obviously you will be paying for medication.
However, I've been down this road recently, and as I say, it is a nightmare. Skin problems quite often, if you've ruled out parasites etc. go back to something wrong internally (the skin being the biggest organ of the body)
I don't think you mention x-rays or scans being done yet? I think, and I'm no vet, just an owner for 37 years, been there, done that, recently, with my ******, I would be asking for x-rays of lungs, and scans of the stomach, kidneys, liver etc.etc. I assume to that you've had a complete blood profile done? Did these come back normal, or 'inconclusive'? I hate to tell you this, but my sadly missed ****** started down this road, x-rays were said to be 'unnecessary' as she'd been scanned clear. I took a second opinion (and rang my original vet who lives 300 miles away from us now, for a third opinion) and both said x-ray. Finally the Senior Partner did x-rays and discovered her lungs and chest cavity were full of tumours.
This does NOT mean your dog has the same, but if you are getting nowhere, I'd urge you to at least take a second opinion now.
Beta isn't the best of food although my puppy was reared, and did well on it. If you are in the UK, I could suggest Burns, and you might run your problems past their excellent Helpline on their website. However, without seeing/testing your boy, they can only suggest.
And you could now ask about referral to a Specialist, but you will be looking at upwards of 拢1000 once you go down that road - much as you may get a definitive answer, which might cost you less in the long term than what you are currently going through.
Good luck - hope you can sort him out. (and Lupus is worth considering!!)
Add - re the Teaching Hospital - you will need a referral from your vet - ask them!!
And I'd go with the Autoimmune Disease theory too - have you had yearly boosters done? - more and more these days, the finger is being pointed at this causing more harm than good and causing problems with the immune system.
Because of the digestive/skin/smell issues, it occurs to me that you could be dealing with yeast/fungus:
http://www.natural-dog-health-remedies.c
Candida overgrowth can cause a raft of apparently unrelated issues, and can be the result of nothing more than antibiotic use.
My chihuahua with food allergies also had skin issues that seem to be fungus related.
I changed her diet, gave her caprylic acid to kill the yeast, added acidophilus to her diet to replace the yeast with beneficial bacteria, and used Malaseb (antifungal) shampoo. She is pretty well cleared up, and the smell seems to have gone.
If this does not help, you might look into homeopathic remedies - sometimes those will work when allopathic remedies will not
Sounds like some major type of allergy - but to what? Have you had an opinion from a different vet, or perhaps been to see a pet allergy specialist. Unfortunately these are going to cost more money, but until you find out what's actually wrong with him you are going to be spending it anyway. It might be worth asking a University who teaches Vet science if they could use him as a case study for students (obviously with your permission before they started any treatments), they may take him on as a challenge, and you might get free treatment - it's worth a try! Good Luck.
Like numerous dogs he cannot digest grain. Check the ingredients in his dog food and if it contains any grain including rice, change to a grain free dog food. Not just gluten free it must be grain free.Stop giving him biscuits and never give him milk. Give him raw carrots to chew or RAW bones from the butchers. Vets must now know of the researches that have been carried out on grain free dog food, however some vets prefer to have ongoing problems that brings in revenue.
I have learnt by my mistakes. My present dog had dreadful problems because of the food which I gave her, I experimented with dog food, I tried raw diets, cooked diets and over the years I tried various dog foods. She did not like the raw diets and the dog food that I gave her resulted in diarrhoea. As an experienced dog owner I introduced any changes gradually. Nevertheless my dog still had problems. She was eight years old before I resolved her problem.
Eventually, because of my researches on the Internet I found that the experts have discovered that GRAIN in our dog鈥檚 diet causes many problems. I now know that grain creates acidity in the blood. This causes skin problems, digestive issues, allergies, sickness, constipation, diarrhoea, anal gland problems etc.,
if your dog has skin problems or any of the above problems PLEASE CHANGE THE DIET. Avoid Grain, rice, beef derivatives and dairy food
A rapid change of diet will upset your dog; any change of diet must be done gradually. Do please change to a grain free diet. I have had sixteen dogs throughout the years and they have had various problems. Perhaps if I had known about the dangers of GRAIN they would have had fewer problems. .
Have you had him checked for lupus? This almost sounds like an autoimmune disorder. he probably needs a doggy version of an ANA which is a blood test used in humans to diagnose these types of diseases.I would ask your vet it's a simple test and would rule out a lot of certain diseases.
