Does anyone know of any alternatives to anti depressants? or any drugs that do not cause sexual side effects?

I'm a 24 year old male. My doctor prescribed me one for the issues i'm facing. I have not taken it as i do not want to experience any sexual problems. I have already had this problem from a previous drug i took for hair loss. Baring this side effect i would love to take an anti depressant as i think it would calm me down mentally. I would also add to this exercise, better diet and more sleep.

I just am really worried of the sides that are listed. Any alternative medication would be helpful, and then i would ask my doctor about them on my next appointment. If needs be i could consider some herbal remedies but would really prefer a drug that is powerful without causing too many problems..

A key point in your question is that you believe that an antidepressant will help calm you down mentally. If your problem is Anxiety there are many safe anti-anxiety medications that don't cause weight gain. An anti-depressant isn't for and won't help anxiety. If you are depressed than you do need an antidepressant and there are some that don't cause sexual side effects. Talk to your psychiatrist about what is your problem and if you are depressed and need an antidepressant ask him for one that doesn't adversely affect you. He will know what is correct for you.Does anyone know of any alternatives to anti depressants? or any drugs that do not cause sexual side effects?
This is my dilemma too - I need antidepressants but have been forced off all the ones I've tried because of serious side effects.

I have severe depression, so I take a lot of herbs. I am currently taking Kira (brands really make a difference) sjw one a day, 5htp and rhodiola. I also take fish oils and try to walk in the country as much as possible. You could see a herbalist who will help you work out the right dosages.
My Doctor gave me Wellbutrin SR. The only side effect was dry mouth for about a week. NO sexual side effects what so ever! If any, It has helped. This drug in known for no sexual side effects. research it. It has worked well for me just taking 150mg a day.
You could try a high daily dose of magnesium glycinate and/or magnesium taurate. It's safe and effective and no side effects. The total mg. per day should be 800-1000 or 200-250 four times a day.

Hope this helps.
The thing about antidepressants is that not everyone gets the sexual side effects. I am on an antidepressant, and my sex drive has actually increased due to the reduction of depressive symptoms. So it might be worth it to make sure that this is an issue for you before you write off antidepressants.

Another common approach is for doctors to prescribe Viagra or Cialis alongside the antidepressant, in order to combat negative sexual side effects.

You should know that herbal remedies are not well examined by research (since the stupid drug companies tend to be the ones that study pharmacological research), and so some of the side effects and drug interactions remain undocumented. You are just as likely to have sexual side effects on, say, St. John's Wort as you are on an SSRI. Just because it's an herb doesn't mean it's safer or that it has no side effects. So do your research and be careful.

Honestly, if you're wary of drugs, I would find a good therapist who does cognitive behavioral therapy. A lot of people experience relief from symptoms with therapy alone. If that doesn't work, then it would be good to reconsider your avoidance of antidepressants, but it's your best non-drug option.
