Heeelp Me.... Am I Protein Deficient?

I'm not a really healthy vegetarian, so I thought the cause of my recent hair loss might be because of my protein lacking diet.





During the week the day consists of:





Breakfast- Usually just a cup of coffee. If I'm feeling extremely weak I'll have a mini blueberry bagel without anything on it or maybe a frozen gogurt. Sometimes I just won't have anything.





Lunch- If I even remember to pack anything I usually have some fruit snacks, a banana or apple, and some chex mix. Again, sometimes I'm just not hungry for lunch.





Snack- Changes through the days between yogurt, some chex mix, some fruit snacks, a mini bagel, some chips, an apple, or just a huge glass of 1% milk.





Dinner- Dinner varies. I eat a lot of grains- breads, noodles, tortillas, ect. I try to eat some kind of veggie with my dinners, but usually that's just a small serving of mushrooms or avocado. And does tomato soup count?





I also drink a ton of milk for some reason. I crave it all the time. During the weekends I usually will try make a fried egg for breakfast.





I know nuts are a good source of protein, but I hate them. They're gross to mean. They get stuck between my teeth and the overall feeling of them being in my mouth pretty much just makes me sick.





Since my hair started falling out I am trying to take fish oil. It makes me feel guilty though, so sometimes I just don't.





This hair loss thing is ridiculous. My once thick curly hair is just getting thinner and thinner and quick frankly it's grossing me out that I have to clean the giant clumps of hair out of my bathtub every day. The only other reason I can think of why it would be falling out is because I just had it highlighted with a different kind of bleach than my norm. But I don't think that's likely because it was falling out before that too, so eh?

The above article does not list protein deficiency as a cause for hair loss, but it does mention iron deficiency as a cause, among many other things.

from your diet, definitely lacking protein. it probably explains your milk cravings too. Check your nails too; they are made of protein.


Some biology: about 26 amino acids make up all proteins in the body. the body makes about 20. the other 6 must be obtained from food. If a diet lacks these 6 amino acids, then the body will harvest itself for those amino acids. Hair and nails grow constantly, so the body takes protein from hair and nails to feed itself.


You can resume meat eating, or eat a combo of beans. You'd need research to know which combo of beans will satisfy the protein requirements though because vegetarian sources of protein don't have all amino acids.
