What are the possible causes of my cat's fur loss?

The fur loss is quite strange. It is only on his rear legs. The loss is in patches around the joints in the middle of his leg. There are about 4 or 5 individual patches of complete hair loss. The size of the patches are about the size of a quarter. This started about 2 or 3 months ago and has slowly progressed. The exposed skin looks fine.

I have not seen him paying attention to this area so I doubt he is causing it. There have been no changes or stresses on him and his behavior hasn't changed either, food is the same. He's about 10 years old or so and still an active outdoor cat with no other problems. Although, he hasn't been out lately since we a full on with winter here in Ottawa.

I tried googling but nothing firm comes up. Any ideas? What are the possible causes of my cat's fur loss?
Allergies? Mange? What are the possible causes of my cat's fur loss?
It could either be stress from something new like a new pet or person or a moved favourite object or.. Mange, Flea allergy, Dermatitis, Hyperthyroidism or just simply allergic to something around the house. One of my cats is allergic to Flea bites, if even one flea comes into contact with her, she gets lots of scabs and her fur starts to fall out, I just have to de-flea her!

If your cat has mange, dermatitis or hyperthyroidism you must take him to the vet, hope you solve his problem soon :)
My guess is he's been sleeping too much on hard surfaces. Dogs get this problem more than cats, since they tend to lie on hard surfaces more than cats, but cats can have it, too.

Ringworm and mange are a couple of possibilities. Some illnesses can cause hair loss as well. A trip to the vet would be a good idea.
